'Working
with young people and working outside, both bring possibilities that
you don't get in more conventional situations. I conducted the National
Youth Orchestra at the Glastonbury Festival - the first time there'd
been an orchestra on the main stage of the biggest music festival in
the world. Young people don't have the same entrenched expectations,
so when the NYO play Dvorak's New World Symphony the piece is reborn.
I once conducted the Sydney Symphony orchestra in Sydney's central park
to 100,000 people, that was awesome.' |
